Welcome to Doula to Doc!
Hi there, and welcome to Doula to Doc! My name is Kyra, and I am thrilled to have you here. As a third-year medical student with dreams of becoming a future OBGYN, this blog is my passion project, born out of an unconventional journey to medicine and a desire to share my experiences with all of you.
I began this journey as a passionate but clueless college kid, drawn to birth work. It blossomed into a fulfilling career as a birth and postpartum doula, where I found immense joy in supporting families during significant moments. However, my longing for a greater role in promoting reproductive health and addressing broader health disparities in my community led me to an unconventional decision – transitioning from doula to medical student.
Stepping into the world of medicine wasn't easy, as I cherished my work as a doula and felt a genuine impact. Yet, I knew that becoming an OBGYN could address the need for more representation and culturally sensitive care, especially as one of the few Black doulas in my area.
Throughout this blog, my mission is to take you along on this transformative journey. I want to share the challenges I faced while navigating this uncharted territory, the triumphs that filled me with hope, and the invaluable lessons I learned along the way. I hope my experiences and the insights I gain as I progress through my medical education will resonate with and inspire those of you who may be on your path of self-discovery and growth.
I vividly remember how much I longed for guidance when I was making the leap from being a dedicated birth and postpartum doula to a full-time medical student. There have been crying sessions and sleepless nights that could have been avoided if I had applied some lessons I've learned so far. So, here I am, ready to share my insights, experiences, and advice with you. While I don't claim to have all the answers (after all, medicine is a never-ending learning process), if my mistakes and discoveries can help you on your path, then I know I'm doing something right.
Although my heart is deeply rooted in birth work and reproductive health, I am more than just a medical student. This blog will also serve as a space where I can share other aspects of my life. From my travels to the historical sites of Israel to the vibrant streets of Korea and various hobbies that add color to my life, there is a whole world outside of medicine, and I want to explore it all. Life is an adventure, and I am always eager to try something new. I'm excited to share the many dimensions of my life with you, and I hope you find the inspiration to embrace your passions and embark on your unique adventures.
I want this blog to be a community where we can learn and grow together. Laughter will be our companion, and inspiration will flow freely as we share our experiences. Let's create a space to uplift and support one another on our unique paths. I wholeheartedly invite you to engage in discussions, leave your thoughts, and provide feedback. Your input is instrumental in shaping this space. I'm eager to hear your stories, as they will make this community thrive.
Once again, thank you for joining me on this exciting journey from Doula to Doc. Together, we'll navigate the challenges, celebrate the triumphs, and embrace the beauty of growth. I can't wait to connect with all of you and look forward to the adventures ahead.
XO
Kyra
